After admiring the view from above, we continued our journey to the river, down winding, narrow streets where cars have no business but drive anyway. The descent was steep; the traffic...stupid. But the sights became more interesting the closer to sea, er, river level we got. Porto was largely spared from the 1755 earthquake that destroyed 85% of Lisbon, so many medieval buildings remain, defiant against time and tourism. Much of the Ribeira is hundreds of years old, although many of the houses are badly in need of repair and risk collapse. Perhaps a good time to buy a fixer-upper?

So this was the riveria of the Douro. It was, as it should be, lined with cafes and restaurants down the entire strip, even as the hills stood in the way. We looked around...
